Rural Human Services' Harrington House is our community's resource for victims of domestic violence and their children.

Harrington House offers a full spectrum of services for both female and male victims of domestic violence. We offer emergency food and shelter, a 24 hour crisis hotline, counseling, referrals and domestic violence education.

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic Violence is a pattern of coersive control that one person excercises over another. It is a behavior that physically harms, arouses fear, prevents a partner from doing what they wish or forces them to behave in ways they do not want to.

Domestic Violence includes the use of physical and sexual violence, threats and intimidation, emotional abuse and economic deprivation.

Domestic Violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. It can happen to couples who are married, living together, or who are dating. Domestic Violence affects people of all socio-economic backgrounds and education levels.

Domestic Violence can be...Physical

·         Preventing you from leaving the home...preventing you from going where you want to...

·         Intimidation or manipulation to control you or your children...

·         Hitting, punching, slapping, kicking, shoving, choking or biting you...

·         Throwing or breaking objects in the home or damaging the home itself during arguments...

·         Following you when you leave the home...

·         Forcing sexual intimacy when you don't want to, or do things sexually that you don't want to do...

Emotional or Verbal

·         Constantly criticizing you and your abilities as a spouse or partner, parent or employee...

·         Humiliating or embarrassing you in front of other people...

·         Criticizing or disapproving of your friends, relatives, neighbors, or co-workers...

·         Making it hard for you to find or keep a job or go to school...

·         Getting suddenly angry or "losing their temper"...

·         Behaving in an over-protective manner or become extremely jealous...

·         Threatening to hurt you, your children, pets, family members, friends or themselves...
